Beach vs Disneyland

Couldn’t rob the kids of childhood memories at Disneyland.  But, couldn’t bear to spend a week in beautiful Southern California and only see the theme park.  So, we planned the best of both.  We spent every other day at Disney, relaxing on the beach at Dana Point.  The hour ride to and from Disney ended up being good down time…mostly because I wasn’t driving!

Kids Dana Point

Dana Point real estate is prime, and so are the rental prices.  Capistrano Realty had the best selection, www.socalvacation.com  Warning, their places do not come stocked with what I’d consider the basis.  Including paper towels and toilet paper.  Plan accordingly.

When we are VRBO hunting, I always take the same approach:

Must Haves

For this vacation, we had to be right on the beach.  I credit my sister with setting this Must Have for Dana Point.  Otherwise, we’d been in the car hunting for beach parking every time we wanted to frolic in the waves.  Second Must Have, outdoor grilling area.  Third, and always on my list, Must Have a bed for every person.  The house we found had two queens, in private rooms and a set of double bunks in a funky, kid only area.

Daily Activities

Given that this was a Disney-focused vacation, that part was easy. The Weber’s, who vacationed with us also made a day trip to LEGOLAND.  Its about the same distance as the drive to Disneyland.

House Budget

Capistrano Realty helped us find several places that fit our seven day budget. We set our weekly budget at $3,200.  The place we booked, 35171 Beach Road, with cleaning and security deposit was $3,195.

As for the house itself, it was perfect for two busy families who spent just breakfast and sleeping inside.  The house isn’t big.  It isn’t fancy.  It’s a duplex. But it was clean, safe and perfect for us.  It was literally 10 feet from our back door to the beach.  We could sit under the patio umbrella and see the kids playing on the beach.  There were tons of other kids; we were there mid-March during Spring Break.

The cherry one top, cooking s’mores on the beach every night.  Right in front of the house is a fire pit, perfect for watching the sunset over the Pacific.
