The snow-capped purple Rocky Mountains always start calling as college football starts to get interesting. Its still blazing hot in Denver, with Indian Summer nights the drop in to the 40’s. But the mountains are tipped in white glistening snow that hint at ski season. Now’s the time to book your weekend get-aways for next season. Here are our recommendations for you Colorado playground in Winter Park and the Fraser Valley.
On the Mountain
Zephyr Mountain Lodge is as close as you can get. The condos are compact, so I’d recommend it only for a single family rather than big groups. But, you can ski-in, ski out and find a cocktail or a Nutella crepe right out your front door. Almost as close, and more luxurious is the Fraser Crossing. The units are larger and newer and, in my opinion, have a better view of the mountain.
My most favorite, while technically not “on” the mountain, is Antlers at Lakota Townhomes. The townhouses are huge, with plenty of room for a couple of families. They almost all have hot tubs. But most important, they have an amazing view of the mountain. Set right across highway 40, it’s a short walk or bus ride to the mountain base.
We’ve always had good luck booking through Winter Park Lodging Company. They have condos and townhouses throughout the Fraser Valley. They run some great pre-season specials. I’d suggest you get on their mailing list, so you are alerted to last minute deals.
Our best kept in-town secret will remain our secret (hehe). We call it the Brady Bunch house because its is trapped in 1977. Its easy to forgive the décor, when you can walk out your back door and hike the Vasquez ridge.
Just North of Vasquez road, is a great townhouse community where we’ve stayed for Superbowl weekend. It’s a great sized place with room for 2+ families. The owners are local, and wonderful to work with. We hastily forgot all our ski coats in the front hall closet after our last visit. Andrea, the owner, was great at letting us back into the house before her next renters.
All these places have a hot tub. A must for us after skiing. Nothing better than a Dark & Stormy while taking in the late afternoon sun and mountain views while soaking away the bumps of the day.
